The Húsafell Canyon Baths hike provide a wonderfully solitary and remote setting to enjoy the splendor of the highlands and enjoy a relaxing dip in a geothermal pool.

The tour

The Húsafell canyon baths hike offers you an authentic Icelandic experience. Few things are more authentic then hiking through the incredible landscapes of the highlands and taking a relaxing soak in a geothermal pool.

The Húsafell locals went to great lengths to build the canyon baths for you to be able to experience this great tradition. They worked hard on keeping the entire structure as environmentally aware, sustainable, and true to the area’s heritage as possible. At the Húsafell canyon baths, you are able to choose from two geothermal pools with different temperatures, 30-41°C (86-105°F), plus a cold-water spring at 10°C (50°F). Each with a spectacular view of the surrounding canyon, mountains, and glaciers.

On the tour you will witness how the canyon baths were constructed from locally sourced, natural materials. Materials like flagstone from the canyon floor. The baths are hot-spring fed pools designed to blend into the environment seamlessly. This is done by using the age-old methods that were used for creating Snorralaug e.g., a heritage site pool dating back to the 10th century. The bathhouse located on-site is made from timbers from the area. Even the changing room hooks are repurposed horseshoes from a nearby family farm.

The hike to the baths

You will be led by a knowledgeable local guide in English during your Húsafell canyon baths hike. You will begin with a short ride from the Húsafell Activity Centre to the trailhead located in the remote Icelandic Highlands. On this 2-hour tour you will enjoy an easy walk among the natural wonders that are not found in many guidebooks. These include the spectacular two-tiered waterfall Langifoss. You will also learn about Iceland’s renewable energy practices, cross an icy stream of glacial meltwater, and see the site to Okjökull, Iceland’s first glacier claimed by climate change.

The highlight of our excursion is a serene soak in the Húsafell Canyon Baths, a surreal hot spring paradise that has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy half an hour of relaxing, recharging and breathing in the pure Icelandic air before heading back to Hotel Húsafell.
