This full day ATV Volcanic Safari Tour is a great way to explore Iceland’s nature in a thrilling way.
The tour
The ATV volcanic safari tour will at 4×4 Adventures base camp in Grindavík. Grindavík is located on the Western part of the Reykjanes peninsula geopark. After meeting up with your guide for the day and receiving a safety briefing you will start your adventure. The first part of the tour will have you driving the quad bikes for around 3 hours around the peninsula before stopping for lunch. After lunch, you will head East along the peninsula and visit Krísuvík. There you will be driving along a route called “Vigdísarvellir”, a great route to experience nature in a different way.
Before lunchbreak
The ATV volcanic safari tour will take you through all types of terrain. You will start at the old harbor where you can find shipwrecks and age old foundations that remain unspoiled and protected. You will be driving through a rough mountain path that leads toward Mt. Thorbjörn, a dormant volcano towering over Grindavík area and the Blue lagoon. From there you will keep on driving to the one hundred craters of Eldvörp. This area is full of volcanic craters. There you will be able to take a short hike to one of the craters and experience the extensive geothermal activity it holds. A true hidden gem.
Next you will drive towards the local geothermal area Gunnuhver. Gunnuhver holds very active steam vents and mud pools. The mud pools are formed where steam from boiling geothermal reservoir water rises, condenses, and mixes with the surface water. Accompanying gases such as, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide, make the water very acidic. This causes the fresh lava rock to turn into bubbling clay.
You will then continue towards the ocean to visit Valahnukar rock formation. In this area there are often very high waves and rugged seas. This often offers a great spectacle for the eyes and ears when the big waves crass into the rocks. There you’ll also a view overlooking the volcanic island Eldey and the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, Reykjanesviti.
The next part of the ATV volcanic safari tour will take you on a cinematic journey. You will be driving through black lava fields that are one of many spots in Iceland featured in the world famous Game of Thrones series. From there you will drive towards the black sandy beach, Sandvík, where Clint Eastwood filmed the award-winning movie Flags of our fathers. The film was based on the battle of the japanese island, Iwo Jima, during World War II.
You will then be driving inside a rocky canyon. There you will stop for hot chocolate and twisted donuts (kleinur). You are now situated between the continental plates of Eurasia and America.
A lunchbreak
You will then head back to Grindavík for lunch. There you will park the quad bike by a restaurant that’s located by the harbor. The restaurant is decorated with all sorts of old fishing equipment and pictures from the old days of Grindavík. They offer lobster soup and soup of the day (vegetable, Icelandic meat soup etc,) and lots of other delicious meals. ( Lunch is included )
After the lunchbreak
After the lunchbreak the ATV volcanic safari tour continues. You will jump back on the ATV’s and continue your adventure. We will be heading to the volcano garden of Krýsuvík were we’ll see breathtaking mountain ranges with geothermal steam vents and volcanic craters.
You will then head towards the famous geothermal area of Seltún. one of the absolute highlights of the ATV volcanic safari tour. Here sulfatases, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs have formed through the ages and the soil is colored bright yellow, red, and green. Sulphur deposits were mined here in 1722 – 1728 and in the 19th century. German scientist Robert Bunsen visited the site in 1845 and proposed a hypothesis on the formation of sulphuric acid in nature. Near the geothermal area there are several craters created by the explosions of overheated groundwater!
